Of the four items we entered at the produce show (pumpkin, 3 potatoes, raspberry jam, and sloe gin) we won two first prizes!  One for our jumbo pumpkin…

And the other for our 3 potatoes – which we were really surprised about and very pleased…

Sadly our sloe gin and raspberry jam didn’t get a prize, but I did make them pretty labels…

And the sloe gin was snaffled up by one of our local councillors…

So we’ve had two pumpkins in particular that have been steadily growing in size.  I can’t quite believe I planted a variety that grows so big, but hey-ho, it’s all good fun.

Tomorrow we’ve got our local Produce Show so we’re going to enter one of them along with some potatoes, possibly some tomatoes, and a few other bits and pieces.

Yesterday we spent a couple of hours at the allotment digging up our potatoes – I can’t believe the amount and size of some of the potatoes we dug up.

So just from one row…

We dug up this overloaded basketful of gorgeous red skinned potatoes…

On Sunday we entered a couple of items into our local produce show.  Sadly I overcooked my lemon drizzle cake and it came in a miserable fourth…gutted.  My marmalade didn’t even come anything – I won’t be trying that Country Living recipe again.

Thankfully we got three 2nd place awards – for our giant yellow courgette, a pretty arrangement of hedgerow berries, and a plate of fruit scones.  The recipe for my scone’s comes from my colleague and friend Jane – who makes the best scones ever.  No question.

My version of Jane’s fruit scones had a ‘lovely appearance’ but I lost marks because I didn’t tidy up the edges (i.e. pull off the currants that were sticking out…) and they needed a pinch of salt.  Hmm.  I’m not sure I can be doing with winning 1st prize if I’m required to carefully tidy up the edge of my scones, and besides, I like rustic food.

My Latest Instagram Snaps

I've been away from Instagram for 2 weeks now. I don't really know what made me stop I just felt I needed to get away from it for a bit. I'm fighting against post natal depression and perhaps Instagram perpetuates the falsity that things are all fine. It's easy to miss out the dark bits and look back on only the lovely bits. I was all at sea with why I was sharing pictures, who for, and sometimes the pressure I've felt seeing snippets of other peoples lovely looking lives got a bit too much - I know no one's life is perfect but my mind plays games and convinces me otherwise. Then this evening I got a comment on a blog post I wrote about my personal health struggles a few years back and how I healed myself with food. My sharing had given this woman hope and helped her as she is in a place I once was. It reminded me why I started out my blog, which was to share snippets of my experiences in the hope that it could inspire or help just one person, that they wouldn't feel so alone. I hope I get back into Instagram as I've missed the little community I've found here x The fun and glitz of our past 24hrs in London was so nice, but for me I still don't think you can beat that coming home feeling. For me it was watching Tilly eat a plate of homemade scrambled eggs (with her hands of course!), a line of washing hanging in the kitchen, and just feeling relaxed in our own space again. On our way to the station, Tilly's first ride in a black cab, just wanted to play with all the fun looking switches :) London you were fab!
